Web host grumble
Dec. 30th, 2003 05:22 amI have had a free web host for my biz site since 1999. Last May I tried to sign up for a paid account, but I couldn't find a phone number. After several frustrating emails, I still didn't have a phone number. I tried again in September. The reason I didn't want to sign up at their website was that they wanted the security code on my credit card. I phoned Amex, and they said I shouldn't need to give it to them.
Well, this month I received a notice that they would no longer be hosting free accounts. That I would have to get a paid account or lose my hosting. So, I sent another email and much to my surprise, I got a phone number.
I phoned. I spoke with Jason. He took my credit card number. He wanted the security number. His system wouldn't take the card without. He said that they did it so they knew that someone hadn't just found my statement and gotten the number there. (Hey, now that I think about it, the expiry date isn't on the statement and he got that.) I reluctantly gave him the security code. The system wouldn't accept my card. It wasn't from the U.S. If I want to use their service, I will have to send a money order and pay for an entire year. I neither want the expense and hassle of a money order, nor do I want to be signed up for an entire year.
swestrup might be able to host my site reliably enough to use for biz. It also messes with my cashflow. I'm broke and I still have to pay for my professional tax software (~$500).
The billing department is going to look into alternatives. I suggested PayPal and Verified by Visa. They are concerned about fraud.

Date: 2003-12-30 12:13 pm (UTC)It's a minor pain to change your DNS, but you should do this before tax season really hits if you think you want to change services. It only takes a couple of days to change over throughout the net.
