I made shepherd's pie with ground lamb. It was yummy. I followed the recipe in the new (1997) version of Joy of Cooking. I usually prefer the 1975 edition, but that recipe called for using hash. Didn't sound right to me. I added a layer of frozen corn between the meat and the mashed potatos. So, it wasn't exactly like they make it in England. We had salad with it, but there are vegis, meat, and potatos in the shepherd's pie, so the salad isn't really necessary.

In Joy of Cooking, they wrote that if you use ground beef it is called cottage pie, but I think it should be called cowboy pie, 'cause cowboys herd cattle. On the other hand, cowboy pie sorta sounds like it is made with ground cowboys.

Oh yeah, it was just Thanksgiving in the U.S (It was 13 October, here in Canada). You guys would have a lot of turkey leftovers right now. Sounds better than chicken à la king.

Actually, beef is the substitute. It's called shepherd's pie, you know - sheep herders.

The addition of corn is a variation I learned here in Québec. It's not used in England. Corn goes amazingly well with ground beef or lamb. I like making dishes with New Zealand lamb 'cause it's usually organic. The New Zealand farmers let their sheep run free and graze on land that has never been used for anything and they are very conservative about using antibiotics. They don't pay for organic certification, so it's pretty cheap compared with certified organic meat.
