Yesterday was [livejournal.com profile] swestrup's birthday and we're broke, so I made a coffee cake as a birthday cake and made it for breakfast. I also made fudge. I haven't made fudge in years. It did something I've never seen before. I poured it into a buttered glass lasagna pan to cool and it hardened almost immediately. It tastes great, but it isn't nice flat squares - it's a peculiar looking lump.

I also made chicken stock. I think it turned out pretty well. I made 'cause [livejournal.com profile] swestrup wants to make leek and potato soup and the recipe calls for chicken stock. Besides that, I made a dynamite garlicy ranch dressing to go with supper. I made enough for several days.

I tried to make English muffins. Well, there's something vaguely English muffin-like in my kitchen now. I think my yeast was dead. It's been in the cupboard for a long time. I used to make them and they would turn out wonderful. I used the same recipe, from Joy of Cooking. The newest edition of Joy doesn't even have a recipe for English Muffins. I really don't like the new one as much as the older one.

In other news, my shoulder is still hurting. This has been going on since the middle of October. It's a real nuisance, 'cause it limits the use of my right arm. I've got a doctor's appointment for the 15th of December.

g'night all

I usually buy it in a bag at the health food store - way cheaper than the little envelopes. That's a great idea to put it in the fridge. But, in this case, it probably wouldn't have helped. That yeast was very old.

You know you are amazing.
I am so lazy and even if I didn't have kids, I would never think to make all that stuff. I hope your hubby appreciates you!

I hope your arm is better soon! HUGS!

I'm usually too lazy to do stuff like that. The urge just sorta snuck up on me yesterday. The cake and fudge were for my sweetie's birthday. I've been told that teaching the kids to make fudge is a great way to get them interested in cooking. It's quite easy and the results are fabulous. If you want, I can give you a good recipe.
