My hubby, [livejournal.com profile] swestrup, was flipping channels and we caught the end of an ad on a French channel. There was an attractive young woman and text: Condom minceur. What the heck does that mean? I thought minceur meant slenderizing or referred to weight loss. The images that come to mind regarding a "condom minceur" are, well, humourous.

I don't know what the hell that means, but I'm getting some very funny mental images.

I think it is Québecois, colloguial French. According to my Larousse dictionnaire USUEL, "minceur" is a noun that means someone or something that has the attributes of "mince". "Mince" is an adjective that means thin, or light weight, or of little value. It comes from Old French: to cut into very tiny pieces. Gee, that sounds like the English definition of mince.

well, combining "condom" with "cut into very tiny pieces" is an even funnier mental image...

According to replies the Montréal community, you are right. It means a thin condom. But I googled "minceur" and every link had to do with losing weight.
