1 in 4 Quebecers would go to work with H1N1 flu: poll

There's a recession. There are families living on one pay cheque that had two pay cheques a year ago. Though I don't agree with going to work with the flu, I can understand why some people would feel the need. It's time for the government to step up to the plate and compensate people for lost wages for staying home when they have the flu. Partial compensation, like Employment Insurance would be appropriate.

It's everybody's health that's at risk.

OK, but that would mean a mechanism to get everyone tested. I've had H1N1 for a week, I've felt moderately lousy but haven't been sick enough to see a doctor. The government would not accept my say-so, would they? They'd want a medical certificate, so either you'd have a lot of sick people having to drag themselves to clinics to get examined and get a paper (possibly passing the virus to other folks in the bus and metro as they go to and fro) or else the government would have to appoint mobile teams to do house calls.

Mobile teams to do house calls sounds like the solution to me. It's what they do in Denmark, when you need a doctor at night or are too ill to go. There is a fine for abusing the service.

BTW, I think anyone with any kind of flu should be covered.

I think if this flu had harsher symptoms they'd have to have done the house calls teams to bring people Tamiflu and collect them to bring to flu wards if they were getting worse. But that's not going to happen now.

I doubt they will do it unless it gets really out of hand.

But, back to the original idea of compensating people for lost wages when they stay home. It would be cheaper just to compensate people and take their word for it. I don't think there would be enough cases of fraud that it would pay to set up a system of checking - just monetarily speaking.

I would lose my job.
I've been sick, what is this, week 4? had all the symptoms, the doctor at the walk in looked at me for 20 seconds and told me it was a virus, nothing I could do.

I'm still fucking sick, not once has anyone told me to go home.
