cell phone plans

I'm going cross-eyed looking at cell phone plans for the US. I'm only looking at stuff that doesn't require a contract. I am officially tired of this (for now) and I'm going to go to sleep.

In a strange way it's actually comforting to know that cell phone operators in other countries are also bizarre, inexplicable and impossible to figure out!

One thing is for sure:

The US plans might be confusing, the Canadian ones are downright painful in terms of cost. The sense of many who have travelled and seen what the world has to offer is that we have some of the highest cost service around, if not the highest.

The competition and the size of the population south of the border solve that problem nicely. I know it's of little consolation given the time frame with which you and swestrup are working but in the end, I'll take their confusion over our costs any day.

It's doubly frustrating when you know how simple it can be in parts of Europe: Three years ago I went to the UK for two weeks. On my second day there, I simply walked into a cell phone shop and said, "I'd like a Pay-As-You-Go SIM for this phone, please," waving my tri-band GSM phone at them. 5 minutes and $20 later, I had a UK phone number and was texting my local friends to let them know what it was.

Wow, that is impressive.

FWIW, I had a look at the Virgin Mobile (USA) plans and I agree that they do look attractive.

Now doesn't that sound like it should be do-able anywhere they have GSM phones?
