West Island Wilderness
Sep. 20th, 2007 12:29 amAcross the street, in the "scrub", I saw a golden brown silhouette with long ears. A jack rabbit? In Québec? Oh my, it's a fox. I heard there were foxes here on the West Island, but in 12 years of living on the West Island, I never saw one here before. The fox slipped cautiously out of the bushes and wandered across the clearing and back into the bushes. It made me smile.
Later in the day I saw a pigeon sitting on the ground by a tree. It didn't fly, or even walk, away when I approached. I think it was a juvenile who hadn't really learned to fly yet. It had that look about it, even though it was full sized. It didn't look frightened by my approach, but simply looked at me.
The next day there was a mess of pigeon feathers near the tree where the juvenile pigeon had been sitting. Had the fox been there? It's an industrial area, so it isn't likely that it was a dog or a cat. I didn't see any blood. Had there been a struggle between fox and pigeon? Was the pigeon a good meal for a mother fox and her kits? Had the pigeon finally learned to fly? I can only wonder.
