Note to self: putting the bread in the toaster isn't good enough. You have to push down the lever thingee if you you want the bread to get toasted. d'oh!

I often have that problem with coffeemakers. And the dryer.

I can usually work the toaster. It's coffee makers that are my "specialty". I think I have come up with more failure modes for coffee makers than most people: no coffee & no water are the obvious ones. Or the disasterous failures: no pot, a full pot, or some other thing that makes the coffee go all over the counter.
