Many years ago I met a man who said he was a logger. His family had been logging in the redwood forests for a long time. I don't remember his name, so I'll call him John.

According to John, a redwood forest is a very interesting thing. He claimed that the trees "face" the centre of the forest. If you put a wide road through a redwood forest, you split it in two. The trees start to "face" the new centre of the section they are in. That's pretty weird, considering how old those trees are. He said that they are babies for the first hundred years or so. If they survive that, they will live to grow old. They will know how to resist fire and storms. Actually, if there is a high wind, the tops of the trees will lean into the wind! It will be completely calm on the floor of the forest. But, if the wind is not so strong, the trees will use it to groom themselves. There will be branches and other debris flying everywhere.

I don't know if I believe this, but I do know that a redwood forest is a magical place. You can feel it. You wonder if the trees are sentient. I still don't understand how John could tell those stories and still cut down redwoods.

Does anyone know when fireflies mate on the island of Montreal? That's when they light up their bums at each other. I saw them one summer in Centennial Park (DDO) and I don't remember what part of the summer. It was very cool.
